Harlech Castle is just around the headland from Portmeirion to the South. It is a medieval fortification that stands proud looking out to the Irish Sea, high on a rock ledge. The Castle was constructed by Edward I in the years 1282 to 1289 following his invasion of Wales.
In Welsh fame the Castle was taken by Owain Glyn Dwr in 1404 and became Glyn Dwr's residence and military headquarters.
