Places in and around the Elan Valley that the
Gums may have visited in their
search for the 'Malvicieux' Gum.
Montgomery Castle that over looks the town of Montgomery, between Welshpool and Newtown and not far from the Elan Valley.
The castle started to be built around 1072, improved around 1224 after a few attacks and further improved around 1228.
The castle survived until 1643, when after surrender to parliamentarian forces (controlled by Oliver Cromwell) during the 'English' Civil War, it was destroyed to its current state.

The 'Bards of Wales', a Hungarian folk poem, which tells of a 'legend event', when 500 bards were slaughtered following a banquet in Montgomery Castle by King Edward 1st, after the Bards refused to sing his praises as their conqueror.
